How Much CBD Is Enough?
This is a common question for those new to CBD as well as many experienced users. As with many things, the answer boils down to your context and your goals. In this article we provide a few factors to consider and hope to clarify some of the mystery around CBD potency and dosing.
To anyone experienced with cannabis you might expect CBD doses to be similar to THC. However, THC is much stronger and takes relatively little to get the desired effect. CBD and THC are very different and so are the respective doses and uses. Generally five to ten milligrams of THC is enough to get a normal person high. While CBD does not get you high, it does take relatively more of it to get the desired effects of relaxation, pain relief, sleep support, etc.
Our experience has been that relaxation and sleep support can be achieved with dose of 20 to 50 milligrams of CBD usually ingested with an oil dropper or some kind of edible like a gummy. It may take a few tries before you really start to notice it but it will be apparent after a month or so. Most evidence on this is anecdotal since there is little incentive for pharmaceutical companies to spend millions of dollars researching something that can’t be patented. I was skeptical at first too, but after several uses I started to notice how it helped me relax and sleep.
Pain support with CBD tends to require even higher potency. When ingesting CBD for pain, we have seen good results between 50 and 100 milligrams. The catch is that you need to make sure not to accidentally ingest too much THC if using Full-Spectrum products. The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) limits the amount of THC in an orally ingested hemp oil to 100mg or 0.3%, whichever is less. This means that a 30 serving hemp oil dropper bottle could contain up to 3.33mg of THC per serving. If you were to take two or three droppers full of that oil you would likely be good and stoned. This might treat your pain but make for an unexpected side effect. Make sure you know how much THC is in your product, or get a product that has non-detectable THC levels.
Our preferred method for CBD pain treatment is with CBD topicals such a balm, salve or lotion. When the potency is high enough these products can be very fast and effective…WHEN THE POTENCY IS HIGH ENOUGH! Most CBD product manufacturers seem to be borrowing their calculations (and their pricing) from THC brands when formulating products because they only use around 200 to 500 milligrams in a container. Based on our R&D this is not nearly enough CBD to be effective and is part of the reason CBD often gets a bad wrap. We regularly have to convince potential customers to give our products a shot after being previously let down by some over priced topical they got at the corner market. We use 4000mg of CBD in our 2oz jars of salve as well as other herbs that are known to reduced pain an inflammation. Often I will give out a sample at a Farmer’s Market to a skeptical customer, only to have them return five minutes later exclaiming “I can’t believe it, my pain is gone!” I know it sounds too good to believe but it has happened on several occasions. The moral of the story is that CBD topicals have to be STRONG.
